Nigerian Business Leader Wins U.S. Congressional Honour
Nigerian business executive Attah Onoja has earned a prestigious Congressional Proclamation from the United States House of Representatives, recognising his outstanding contributions to international trade and his efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States.
The honour was presented by U.S. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries during the Guyana Independence Celebration Committee of New York’s 60th Independence Anniversary event. The ceremony attracted diplomats, government officials, entrepreneurs, and members of the African and Caribbean diaspora, serving as a platform to celebrate shared heritage while promoting stronger economic partnerships.
Onoja was recognised for more than 20 years of leadership across key sectors, including shipping, energy, distribution, and marketing. The Congressional Proclamation commended his commitment to advancing trade, attracting investment, and fostering institutional partnerships that have strengthened commercial ties across Africa, the Caribbean, and North America.
As President of the African Caribbean Chamber of Trade, Commerce and Industry (ACCTCI), Onoja has played a leading role in promoting cross-border business opportunities, encouraging private-sector collaboration, and supporting economic diplomacy. He also previously represented the Nigerian High Commission in Guyana, further reinforcing Nigeria’s commercial and diplomatic engagement in the region.
Speaking after receiving the award, Onoja described the recognition as more than a personal achievement, saying it reflects the growing influence of Nigerians on the global economic stage. He stressed that Africa’s long-term prosperity depends on building trusted international partnerships that encourage trade, innovation, and sustainable investment.
He dedicated the honour to Nigerians making positive contributions across the world, expressing hope that the recognition would inspire young professionals to pursue excellence, embrace leadership, and seize opportunities that create lasting global impact.
The recognition comes at a time when Nigeria is expanding its international trade footprint through initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Analysts say Onoja’s achievement underscores the increasing role of Nigerian professionals in shaping global commerce and strengthening economic relationships beyond the continent.
