Prince Taiwo Oyekan, Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government, has raised the alarm over escalating environmental threats facing the area and the urgent need for proactive action to protect the community’s future.
In a statement addressing residents, Oyekan highlighted the pressing issues confronting the local environment.
“Our environment is facing many challenges such as climate change, flooding and pollution,” he said.
The chairman stated that preserving a habitable environment is critical for the survival and well-being of current and future generations.
“Our lives and future depend on habitable environment, let’s keep the environment clean and green.”
The council boss remarks comes amid growing concerns over recurrent flooding, poor waste management, and the broader impacts of climate change in Lagos.
Lagos Island, with its dense population and historic significance, has often borne the brunt of these environmental pressures.
Local government officials are expected to intensify sensitization campaigns, promote proper waste disposal practices, and encourage tree planting and green initiatives across wards in the area.
Residents have been called upon to play active roles in maintaining cleaner surroundings, from avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse to supporting drainage clearance efforts.
