Edo Queens Crowned NWFL Premiership Champions For Second Time In Three Years
By Saheed Afolabi
Edo Queens have clinched their second Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title after grinding out a hard-fought 0–0 draw against rivals Bayelsa Queens in the final matchday of the Super Six playoffs at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday.
Coming into the decisive clash, Bayelsa Queens needed a victory to snatch the championship, while Edo Queens only required a point. The Benin-based side delivered a disciplined, tactically sharp performance, neutralizing their opponents attacking threats in a tense, end-to-end contest that ultimately ended goalless.
The result confirmed Edo Queens as worthy champions and reaffirmed their place among Nigeria’s elite women’s clubs. They now join Bayelsa Queens as the only two teams to have lifted the NWFL Premiership trophy twice in the last six seasons.
Head coach, Moses Aduku further cemented his legacy, becoming the first manager to win three NWFL Premiership titles in just six seasons. He previously guided Bayelsa Queens to glory in 2022 before steering Edo Queens to victory in 2024 and now 2026.
In other fixtures, Nasarawa Amazons and hosts Rivers Angels played out a goalless stalemate, while FC Robo Queens fought back from behind to earn a 1–1 draw against Abia Angels.
As newly crowned champions, Edo Queens will now fly the Nigerian flag at the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifiers in Burkina Faso, scheduled for August 13 to September 5. They will be aiming to secure a spot in the money spinning CAF Women’s Champions League and keep alive hopes of reaching the lucrative FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
