Lagos Plans State Driver’s Licence Rollout
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the annual ministerial briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, where he revealed that the new licence system is expected to commence within the coming weeks through a partnership arrangement with the Federal Government.
According to Osiyemi, motorists in Lagos will soon be able to choose between the conventional federal driver’s licence and the newly proposed Lagos State version, a move designed to ease processing challenges and improve service delivery for residents.
He explained that the initiative is part of the broader transport transformation agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, which has continued to focus on smarter traffic regulation, digital monitoring systems and technology-driven road safety enforcement.
Authorities believe the state-managed licence system could significantly reduce the delays and bottlenecks often associated with driver’s licence applications and renewals across the country.
The commissioner also highlighted the increasing deployment of digital enforcement technology in Lagos, disclosing that more than 737,000 traffic offences had already been captured through the Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. The figures reflect the government’s aggressive push toward automated traffic monitoring and compliance enforcement.
Officials further noted that thousands of licence applications and renewals have already been processed in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps as efforts continue to streamline the licensing process nationwide.
The planned rollout comes at a time when the FRSC and several state authorities are intensifying reforms aimed at digitising driver documentation, tackling fraud and eliminating persistent delays in licence production and distribution across Nigeria.
