Group Calls for Indigenous Governor in Lagos Ahead of 2027

A group known as Lagos State Prominent Indigenes has called on the All Progressives Congress to reserve the state’s governorship position for qualified indigenous candidates in the 2027 elections.
The group said the move is necessary to promote fairness, equity, and inclusiveness in the political structure of Lagos State.
The call was made during a technical committee meeting held on March 18, 2026, where members also declared support for the re-election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.
In a communiqué signed by its convener, Adesunbo Onitiri, the group argued that key leadership positions in the state, including Governor, Deputy Governor, and Speaker of the House of Assembly, should be occupied by indigenes by 2027.
According to the group, this position is aimed at preserving local identity while strengthening participation of indigenous stakeholders in governance.
It further outlined criteria for aspirants seeking the governorship, noting that candidates must have verifiable Lagos ancestry, strong academic and professional backgrounds, and proven leadership experience in either the public or private sector.
The group also stressed the importance of integrity, stating that aspirants must have clean records, free from corruption or criminal allegations, and must demonstrate discipline, sound character, and a track record of achievements.
It added that prospective candidates should be committed to societal values and capable of delivering transformational leadership through collaboration and inclusive governance.
The group expressed readiness to engage with qualified aspirants, with the aim of identifying candidates who can drive the future development of Lagos State.
