Lagos Records 133 Fire-Related Deaths, N19.72 Billion Losses in 2025
The Lagos State Government has revealed that fire outbreaks across the state claimed 133 lives and caused property losses estimated at N19.72 billion in 2025. This represents a rise from 2024, when 91 deaths and N19.52 billion in damages were recorded.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reducing fire disasters through modern technology, enhanced emergency response systems, and community-level engagement.
The figures were detailed in the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service 2025 Activity Report, presented during the 2026 Staff Engagement programme themed “People, Preparedness and Service Delivery: Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service” in Alausa, Ikeja.
According to the report, the agency responded to 2,617 emergency calls, including 1,685 confirmed fire incidents and 645 false alarms. 473 victims were rescued alive, and property losses were prevented worth N118.32 billion.
In fire prevention efforts, officials inspected 8,791 facilities, issued 7,997 safety certificates, and produced 90 formal reports during the year.
Controller-General Margaret Adeseye noted ongoing operational challenges, including high numbers of false distress calls and inadequate water supply during emergencies. She highlighted the importance of human capacity, preparedness, and quality service delivery in ensuring public safety.
Adeseye praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration for supporting the fire service, particularly through the recent signing of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Bill, describing it as a landmark step toward stronger governance, enhanced institutional capacity, and operational efficiency.
The staff engagement programme also featured presentations, interactive discussions, experience-sharing sessions, the decoration of newly promoted officers, and awards for outstanding personnel. Adeseye reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to a safer, more resilient Lagos, prioritising fire prevention and swift emergency response.
