Veteran Nollywood actress, Ireti Doyle, has expressed concern over what she describes as the increasing toxicity of social media, admitting that the online space has become unsafe for her peace of mind.
The 58-year-old actress, who had been noticeably absent from the public eye for several months, made a rare appearance on Instagram to explain her reasons for staying away.
“I used to wonder what I’d do with myself once I became an ‘empty nester’… now I know,” she wrote. “Had to disappear again. The streets of social media nay, the world in general are becoming too toxic for my quiet soul. How have you been? I hope you’re protecting yourself?”
Born on May 3, 1967, in Ondo State, Doyle spent much of her early life in Boston, United States, before returning to Nigeria, where she earned a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Jos.
Her career began behind and in front of the camera as both a producer and presenter. She created and hosted the popular fashion and lifestyle show Oge with Iretiola for a decade, and also anchored Morning Ride on Silverbird Television.
Doyle’s acting breakthrough came in the late 1990s, leading to acclaimed performances in films such as Sitanda (2006), Across the Niger (2009), and Torn (2013). Her craft has earned her numerous nominations and awards, including Best Supporting Actress at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
She was formerly married to veteran broadcaster Patrick Doyle, though their marriage has since ended.
