Nigerian music icon, Tiwa Savage, has questioned the popular “Big 3” narrative in Afrobeats, arguing that it unfairly sidelines female artistes despite their global achievements.

The term “Big 3” is often used to describe Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid, who are celebrated as Nigeria’s most dominant international exports. But speaking in an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, Tiwa challenged the criteria behind the label, insisting that Tems deserves equal recognition.

“Think about it, certain types of artistes get paid more. So, they get the opportunity to spend more on influencers and radio play, so you are going to hear their music way more.

“Also, I feel like it is unfair to have a conversation about the Top 3 and not mention someone like Tems. Are you serious?” she said.

Tems first gained international prominence in 2020 following her collaboration with Wizkid on the hit song Essence. She went on to win her first Grammy Award in 2023 for her contribution to Future’s Wait For U.

In 2025, she clinched her second Grammy in the newly created “Best African Performance” category, further cementing her place as one of Afrobeats’ most celebrated voices.
