Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), has announced that the Senate will begin its public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution today in Lagos.

Bamidele stated that the initiative will allow for discussions on key national matters, including proposals for the creation of 18 new local government areas, the establishment of state police, and broad reforms to the electoral process, among other topics.

To encourage broad participation, the Senate has organized simultaneous public hearings in other geopolitical zones across the country, with the exception of the North West region.

The hearing in the North West was postponed out of respect for the passing of prominent Kano industrialist and philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who died on Saturday.

In a statement issued yesterday, Senator Bamidele, who also chairs the South West Zonal Constitution Review Committee, outlined the schedule for the two day hearing.

He stressed that the event offers Nigerians an important opportunity to share their opinions on crucial matters that influence the nation’s governance structure.
