A man identified as Gbenga Odunaya is facing prosecution for allegedly beating up his wife during a squabble.
Police Prosecutor, ASP Jimoh Joseph, during the arraignment of the suspect at the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, claimed that the incident happened at Noforija area, Epe, Lagos.
Joseph further mentioned that Odunaya pummeled his wife, Muibat Laminat – the complainant, causing severe injuries on her.
According to the Prosecutor, Laminat said that her deceased father willed a property in her name. The latter added that the property was sold at N11,000,000, the sum, deposited into Odunaya’s account.
According to findings, things fell off between the duo which forced their separation and in sequel, Laminat demanded for a refund of the money. Reports have it that the the defendant coud not provide a satisfactory answer, and thus, failed to return the money to the complainant.
Jimoh told the sitting: “Further enquires by the complainant for her money led to a fight between the duo. Odunaya reacted by attacking Laminat and injured her severely.”
The case was reported to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Adegoke Fayoade, who swiftly ordered Odunaya’s arrest.
He was eventually charged to court on two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
During the procedings, the Prosecutor submitted that the incident which happened sometime in 2020 violates Sections 173 and 168(4) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty.
The court granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. He was thereafter remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility until the bail conditions are met.
The case was adjourned till January 15, 2025.
