X Replaces Revenue Sharing With New Creator Rewards
Social media platform X is overhauling its creator monetisation system, ending its existing Revenue Sharing programme and replacing it with a new Original Content Rewards Programme.
This development now places greater emphasis on creativity, originality and meaningful contributions.
Under the new system, eligible creators will be rewarded based on qualified impressions generated by their original posts among Premium users, marking a significant shift in how the platform measures and pays creators.
X said the new programme is designed to recognise users who contribute original ideas, expertise, journalism, entertainment, commentary and other forms of valuable content to conversations on the platform.
The company has stopped accepting new applications for its Revenue Sharing programme, while existing participants will continue receiving payments under the old system until September 7, 2026, when the programme will officially end.
X said existing participants will receive three final payments, with the first two scheduled for August 14 and August 28, while the final payment covering eligible earnings through September 7 is expected around September 11.
From September 8, eligible creators will be able to apply for the new Original Content Rewards Programme, subject to meeting the platform’s revised eligibility requirements.
The new programme introduces a higher threshold for creators seeking to monetise their content. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, maintain an account in good standing and live in a country where the programme is available.
They must also subscribe to X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, have at least 500 verified followers and generate a minimum of 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within the previous 90 days.
Creators will also be expected to maintain a consistent record of publishing original material.
X said rewards will be calculated using qualifying impressions, defined as unique views from Premium users on the Home Timeline where at least half of a post is visible. Paid, promoted, artificial or fraudulent impressions will not count.
The platform is also taking a tougher position on recycled content. Eligible material can include threads, videos, memes, graphics, illustrations, reporting, analysis, commentary and reactions, provided the content offers meaningful value.
Simply reposting another person’s work will not qualify for rewards. Creators who use existing material will be expected to add substantial value through commentary, analysis, context, humour or meaningful creative transformation.
Minor modifications, including cropping, filters, borders, watermarks or simple text overlays, will generally not be considered sufficient to make reused content eligible.
X will also exclude copied or substantially reproduced material, unauthorised reuploads, automated content, disinformation and misleading material from the programme.
Creators will be responsible for securing the necessary rights, permissions or licences when using third-party material.
The overhaul appears to be part of X’s effort to reduce low-effort reposting and engagement farming while directing more financial rewards towards creators who generate original material and contribute meaningful conversations.
The company said it wants to recognise creators who break news, share expertise, tell stories, produce entertainment and offer meaningful perspectives.
The change also builds on X’s broader push to attract professional writers, journalists, commentators and other creators to the platform. The company has been expanding its long-form publishing capabilities while encouraging users to produce more substantive original work.
For creators, the new system could make originality a more important factor in building a sustainable income on X. A large following alone may no longer be enough, as creators will need to consistently produce original content and attract qualifying engagement from Premium users.
The move also reflects a broader shift across the social media industry, where platforms are increasingly trying to distinguish authentic creative work from recycled, automated and engagement-driven content.
For X, the new programme represents an attempt to build a creator economy where original ideas, expertise and creative value translate more directly into financial rewards.
For creators, the message is clear: originality is becoming increasingly important to monetisation.
