Wahab Tackles Tunde Ednut Over Viral Mushin Waste Video

The Lagos State Government has challenged Instagram blogger Tunde Ednut over a viral video showing heaps of refuse in Mushin, saying the footage was old and did not reflect the current situation in the area.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known in a post on X on Saturday while responding to the video shared by the blogger.
Wahab accused Ednut of repeatedly presenting Nigeria, particularly Lagos, in a negative manner and urged him to verify information before publishing content to his large audience.
The commissioner said the location shown in the viral video had already been cleared, adding that the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, had continued its operations in the area.
“Dear Tunde @mazitundeednut, we understand your persistent tendency to portray Nigeria, particularly Lagos State, in a negative light, often to the detriment of your audience.
“However, we believe it is important to verify information before publishing it.
“You can still generate engagement and earn from your content without inadvertently misleading your followers,” Wahab wrote.
The commissioner acknowledged that Lagos, like other major cities, continues to face challenges with waste management.
He identified the reluctance of some residents and property occupiers to pay for waste collection services provided by authorised Private Sector Participants, PSPs, as one of the challenges confronting the state.
Despite this, Wahab said LAWMA and its teams had continued to intervene in areas experiencing waste management challenges.
“Nevertheless, LAWMA and its teams have consistently intervened in areas where such challenges arise and continue to work towards maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment,” he added.
Wahab also called on content creators to exercise greater responsibility by confirming the accuracy and currency of information before sharing it online.
“We therefore encourage you to verify your information before publishing, rather than relying on outdated content that could give a misleading impression of the current situation or unnecessarily project Lagos and Nigeria in a negative light.
“Constructive criticism is welcome, but it is most effective when it is based on accurate and verifiable information,” the commissioner said.
The response comes amid renewed attention to waste management across Lagos, with the state government and LAWMA stepping up enforcement against indiscriminate dumping and unauthorised waste collection.
