WAFCON 2026: Cameroon Shatters Nigeria’s Title Defense

Nigeria title defense in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup Of Nations (WAFCON) has ended following the team’s defeat to Cameroon at the Stade Larbi Zaouli, Casablanca, Morocco.
Myriam Nyadjou’s thunderous long range free kick in the 19th minute made the difference in the game which ultimately booked the Indomitable Lioness spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil and also a semifinal spot in the WAFCON.
The Falcons started the game as the brighter side showing composure and determination.
Cameroon however took the lead from defender, Nyadjou who broke the deadlock of the encounter through a powerful strike from 30 meters.
The goal gave the Indomitable Lioness the necessary momentum as they stood tall against the wounded Falcons.
The Super Falcons renewed their strength in the second half but saw their efforts taken care of by Cameroon shot stopper, Michaely Bihina who was the stumbling block for Nigeria.
The introduction of star forward, Asisat Oshoala late in the game didn’t bring succour to Nigeria.
A late effort that could have been the equalizer in the 93rd minute from Esther Okoronkwo was bravely saved by Bihina as the Lioness eliminated the Falcons through their second win against their West Africa opponent at the WAFCON.
Nigeria still have a chance to qualify for the World Cup as they face South Africa in the Africa playoffs alongside other quarter finalists and the winner going on to play at the Intercontinental playoffs to decide their final fate.
