WAEC Nigeria Gets New Head of National Office
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has appointed Mr S.D. Kum as its new Head of National Office (HNO), with effect from Friday, October 2, 2026.
Kum, who was until his new appointment the Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of Test Administration at WAEC Nigeria, succeeds Dr Amos Dangut, who was appointed Registrar of WAEC International in June 2026.
Dangut, who served as WAEC Nigeria’s HNO for nearly three years, is also expected to formally assume his new regional position on October 2 at the council’s international headquarters in Accra, Ghana.
Kum brings to the position extensive administrative, operational and field experience acquired through years of service across different parts of the country.
Before his appointment as HNO, he served as Branch Controller and Zonal Coordinator in several WAEC offices, including in Rivers State, where he was involved in the coordination of examination activities and enforcement of the council’s regulations.
He gained particular prominence in 2022 when he issued de-recognition letters to 35 secondary schools in Rivers State following their indictment for alleged mass cheating and examination malpractice.
The action formed part of WAEC’s broader efforts to strengthen examination integrity and enforce the directives of the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC).
Throughout his career, Kum has worked closely with state ministries of education, school administrators and security agencies on examination planning, coordination and security.
His responsibilities have included the development and implementation of examination arrangements, coordination with stakeholders and measures aimed at ensuring orderly and secure conduct of WAEC examinations.
His appointment comes at a time when examination integrity, the fight against malpractice and the effective administration of public examinations remain key priorities for the council.
As he assumes office, Kum is expected to build on his operational experience while steering WAEC Nigeria’s national office through its next phase of examination administration.
