Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman has praised Atletico Madrid’s fighting spirit after they battled to a 1-1 draw against VfB Stuttgart in the UEFA Champions League, with the Super Eagles star providing the assist for his side’s goal.

Lookman who came on in the second half proves to be an essential player in the team as he provided an assist to Julian Alvarez to grab Atletico Madrid a point in the contest against the German side.

The Nigerian international admitted that playing away from home against a strong opponent presented a difficult challenge but was pleased with his team’s response.

Lookman acknowledged Stuttgart’s strong start but said Atletico improved after the break in their bid to turn the game around, eventually finding the breakthrough to get back into the contest.

“I think they obviously started strong, they’re a strong team. Playing away from home is never easy. But we wanted to try change the tie in the second half, which we did with the goal,” Lookman said.

The forward also highlighted Atletico’s resilience after they were reduced to 10 men, praising his teammates for remaining organised and fighting together to secure a valuable point on the road.

Despite the setback, Lookman said the team refused to give up, insisting their collective determination helped them hold on for the draw.

“We kept on pushing, but unfortunately we went down to ten men. We dug in, we showed our fight together, stuck together, we take a point away from home.”

Lookman also explained the thinking behind his assist, revealing that he was confident his teammate would make the most of the opportunity inside the penalty area.

“I just tried to look out for him in the box. He’s deadly in the box so I knew he would score.”

The result gives Atletico Madrid a point from a challenging away fixture as they continue their UEFA Champions League campaign.
