Sanwo-Olu’s Water Infrastructure Upgrade Gains Momentum as Lagos Begins Installation of New Pumps
The Lagos State Government has commenced the installation of new pumps at the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations as part of efforts to improve water production and expand access to safe, potable water across the state.
The project, being executed through the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), is part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s ongoing investment in critical water infrastructure aimed at strengthening public water supply for millions of Lagos residents.
According to the Lagos Water Corporation, the installation is a key component of the “Rehabilitation of Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Station – Lots 1, 2 and 3,” a major infrastructure renewal initiative designed to modernise water production facilities, improve operational efficiency and increase production capacity.
The rehabilitation programme forms part of an eight-month project covering the Iju and Adiyan Water Treatment Plants. The state government-funded initiative began in February 2026 and is expected to be completed in October 2026.
Speaking at the project’s kick-off meeting earlier this year, the Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, described the rehabilitation as a transformational project that aligns with the corporation’s strategic business plan and the Lagos State Government’s vision of delivering efficient and sustainable public water services.
He explained that the project focuses on replacing and upgrading critical pumping systems and other essential infrastructure to restore optimal operational efficiency and strengthen the corporation’s capacity to meet the growing water demands of Lagos.
Tijani said the intervention reflects Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to revitalising the state’s water infrastructure and ensuring residents have reliable access to clean and sustainable water supply.
He urged contractors and stakeholders handling the project to adhere to the highest engineering and quality standards while ensuring timely completion.
“This project must not be business as usual. We want all hands on deck to ensure timely and successful delivery. Let this dream become a reality,” Tijani said.
Upon completion, the rehabilitation is expected to improve the operational performance of the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations, increase water production, reduce operational downtime and enhance the reliability of public water supply across Lagos State.
The Lagos Water Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the state’s development agenda by investing in critical infrastructure and delivering efficient, sustainable and customer-focused water services.
