Sanwo-Olu To Headline Yoruba Tennis Club 100th Anniversary Lecture

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will deliver the keynote lecture at the centenary anniversary of the Yoruba Tennis Club, YTC, as the historic club marks 100 years of existence.
The centenary lecture, titled “Built to Last: A Century at the Forefront and the Long Work of Making a City,” will hold on September 15 at the Greetings Hall of the Yoruba Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.
The event is part of activities marking the club’s 100th anniversary and will also feature the launch of its centenary history book and the groundbreaking ceremony for its centenary legacy project.
According to YTC General Secretary, Lookman Kotun, Sanwo-Olu’s participation will provide an opportunity for members, guests and other stakeholders to engage in discussions on governance, the development of Lagos and the role of institutions in the social and civic life of the country.
Kotun described the governor as a leader with experience spanning both the private and public sectors.
The centenary programme will also feature the Norman Williams Exhibition, which will be open to members of the public, researchers, historians and cultural enthusiasts.
Kotun said the exhibition would showcase the club’s history and institutional memory through archival photographs, vintage sporting equipment, historic club journals, foundational documents and other memorabilia.
The exhibition will also trace the evolution of the club from its beginnings at 75 Tokunboh Street, where it was established in 1926 as the Orelodun Tennis Club, to its emergence as one of Nigeria’s prominent indigenous social institutions.
He said visitors would have the opportunity to explore the club’s contributions to the social, cultural and intellectual development of Lagos and Nigeria over the past century.
“Founded in 1926, YTC has, over the decades, served as a hub for dialogue, fellowship and leadership, while preserving its traditions and engaging with major developments in the nation’s history,” Kotun said.
The club’s centenary celebration is themed “A Century at the Forefront of History and Tradition,” reflecting its commitment to celebrating its heritage while sustaining its relevance to Nigeria’s cultural and intellectual development.
