Sanwo-Olu Directs LAWMA Boss Gbadegesin to Resign, Appoints Sanuth

Lagos Governor Orders Leadership Change Amid Mounting Complaints Over Waste Management

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, to resign amid growing complaints over refuse accumulation and waste management challenges across the state.

The governor has reportedly approved the appointment of Dr. Hassan Sanuth as Gbadegesin’s replacement, with the new managing director expected to assume office immediately to oversee efforts to improve sanitation and waste collection across Lagos.

Gbadegesin’s exit comes against the backdrop of persistent complaints from residents over heaps of refuse along major roads, commercial centres and residential neighbourhoods, raising concerns about the effectiveness of waste collection services in the state.

In response to the situation, LAWMA has intensified emergency sanitation operations and reviewed waste collection schedules in several affected areas.

According to updates attributed to the agency, daily refuse collection has been restored along key routes, including Ijesha Road and Itire-Ikate.

In the Bucknor-Ijegun axis, accumulated refuse has reportedly been cleared, while a three-times-weekly collection schedule has been introduced to prevent further waste build-up.

The agency has also taken over interim waste management operations in Okeira and Oluodo following the termination of contracts with Private Sector Participants (PSPs) in the areas over alleged non-performance.

Meanwhile, clearance operations and routine waste evacuation are continuing in Ogolonto, Igbokusu and Iraye as part of efforts to address sanitation concerns in the affected communities.

In Obalende, LAWMA has reportedly cleared identified illegal waste disposal points, installed heavy-duty waste bins and introduced environmental surveillance to discourage indiscriminate dumping and prevent a recurrence.

Sanuth is expected to supervise the ongoing statewide sanitation drive and work towards stabilising refuse collection services across Lagos State’s local government areas.

The leadership change comes at a time when effective waste management remains a major urban challenge for Lagos, a densely populated commercial hub where improper refuse disposal can contribute to environmental pollution, blocked drainage channels and public health concerns.

However, the circumstances surrounding Gbadegesin’s reported departure and the appointment of his successor should be confirmed through an official statement from the Lagos State Government or LAWMA.

The immediate challenge for the incoming management will be to sustain the reported improvements, strengthen waste collection operations and ensure that residents across the state receive reliable sanitation services.
