Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the release of 52 Inmates in various Correctional Centres in the state.

Sanwo-Olu in Prerogative of Mercy also adjusted the sentencing of six other inmates from death sentence to life imprisonment.

The Governor, making the approval in line with the recommendations of the state’s Advisory Council, also hinted on adequate rehabilitation of correctional centres across the metropolis.

In a statement signed by the Attorney General of the state, Lawal Pedro, SAN, 35 inmates are in line for immediate release while others are to be released after serving additional terms of three to six months.

Pedro, who doubles as the state’s Commissioner of Justice, said that the pardon and adjustment of sentencing is in line with Section 212 (1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In addition, the Attorney also disclosed that the administration of Sanwo-Olu is keen on decongesting correctional facilities as part of the justice sector reforms in the state.

Factors considered during the measure include nature of offence commited by the offenders, period of incarceration, age, health condition and the behavioural conduct.

The pardoned inmates were admonished to shun criminality and imbibe in themselves good behavioural attitude and examplary conducts.
