Police Arrest 4 Over Mob Killing Of Basit Kolade In Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 4 suspects in connection with the mob killing of a man identified as Basit Kolade in Lagos.
The suspects were arrested following an investigation into the incident, which occurred at about 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement on the incident.
According to the police, trouble started when Kolade, who was travelling with his wife on Lagos Island, had an argument with a motorcycle rider.
The argument reportedly attracted the attention of people in the area.
The police said the situation escalated after Kolade allegedly reversed his vehicle following an initial collision with the motorcycle, hitting the rider and causing him and the motorcycle to fall.
The statement said an angry mob subsequently attacked Kolade.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but later died from the injuries he sustained. His death was confirmed by officials of the Lagos State General Hospital when he was brought in.
The police identified the arrested suspects as Khalid Rafiq, 20, Gafar Rahim, 21, Ibrahim Azeez, 33, and Samos Momoh, 21.
The suspects are expected to be charged with homicide before a court.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, assured members of the public that the investigation would be thorough and professional.
Fatai warned that an allegation of wrongdoing does not give anyone the right to take the law into their own hands.
He said the position was consistent with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, that police commands should treat cases involving mob action that results in death as homicide, particularly where individuals are found to have incited or supported such attacks.
The Lagos police urged residents to allow law enforcement agencies to handle disputes and suspected criminal acts rather than resorting to mob justice.
