The Nigerian Law School has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old student, Faith Alayande, following a fall from the rooftop of a hostel at its Lagos Campus.

The institution said Alayande, who was originally a student of its Enugu Campus, was temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus while undertaking her externship programme in the state.

The Law School disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho.

According to the institution, the incident occurred at about 4am on Friday, August 7, 2026.

“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00 am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” the statement said.

The institution said Alayande had been provided accommodation at the Lagos Campus for the duration of her externship.

It added that management was working with relevant authorities and the deceased’s family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Management is working closely with the appropriate authorities and the family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, ensure that all necessary procedures are duly followed, and provide further information as appropriate,” it stated.

Police Begin Investigation

The Lagos State Police Command had earlier confirmed the incident.

According to the police, the hostel matron reported that Alayande had been found unresponsive within the premises.

Police officers subsequently visited the scene and evacuated her remains to a morgue, while an investigation was commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.

Earlier reports had claimed that a hostel mate and a relative of the deceased allegedly found a note believed to have been written by Alayande before they began searching for her.

She was subsequently found unresponsive following the reported fall.

However, the Nigerian Law School did not provide details about what may have happened before the incident, and the circumstances surrounding the fall remain under investigation.

Law School Mourns Student

Reacting to the death, the Nigerian Law School expressed condolences to Alayande’s family, colleagues and others affected by the incident.

“The Management extends its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family, colleagues and all those affected by this distressing incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time,” the institution said.

The Law School also appealed to members of the public and the media to respect the privacy of the deceased’s family as they mourn their loss.

It urged the public to avoid speculation and commentary that could further deepen the family’s grief while investigations into the incident continue.

The institution reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of its students and staff.
