N50,000 Monthly Relief: 7 Things Lagos Residents Should Know About FG’s Scheme
Kehinde Adeleye
Lagos residents seeking financial support from the Federal Government’s new N50,000 monthly cash relief scheme need to understand the eligibility requirements, selection process and payment procedure before expecting to benefit from the intervention.
The programme, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), is designed to provide financial assistance to poor and vulnerable households across the country amid rising food prices and the increasing cost of essential goods.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the intervention on Friday, October 30, 2026, saying eligible beneficiaries would receive N50,000 monthly to help meet basic household needs.
As residents of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial centre, seek clarification on how to access the support, here are key things they should know about the programme.
1. Who is eligible for the N50,000 relief?
The intervention is targeted at poor and vulnerable Nigerians whose households have been affected by rising food prices and the high cost of essential goods.
This means eligible residents of Lagos can benefit from the programme, provided they meet the Federal Government’s vulnerability criteria.
According to the government, the financial support is intended to help beneficiaries meet basic household needs and reduce the pressure of rising living costs.
2. How will Lagos residents be selected?
Information published on the programme’s official website indicates that beneficiaries will be identified through verified national identity records and the National Social Register.
The identified individuals and households will undergo screening to establish their eligibility, with selection based on need.
The government said payments would be made in phases, meaning not everyone selected will receive notifications or payments at the same time.
3. How will beneficiaries receive the money?
The Federal Government is working with three digital financial service providers to facilitate payments under the programme.
They are ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo Payment Service Bank (PSB) and NairaGram.
Beneficiaries will access their funds through mobile wallets linked to their phone numbers and National Identification Numbers (NIN).
The money can be withdrawn through banks or Point of Sale (POS) agents or spent directly from the mobile wallets.
The programme’s website also indicates that people without smartphones or mobile data can access the service through the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) option.
4. Do Lagos residents need to register?
No. According to the programme’s official website, there is no application process or registration fee for NERSI.
The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against paying individuals or agents who claim they can secure a place on the beneficiary list.
Instead, selected beneficiaries will be contacted directly through text messages from one of the approved payment providers.
The messages will request their consent before the funds are credited to their mobile wallets. Beneficiaries are expected to follow the instructions provided to accept the payment.
5. When will Lagos residents receive the money?
Although the Federal Government announced the commencement of the intervention on October 30, 2026, it has yet to publish a detailed payment timetable showing when each batch of beneficiaries will receive the funds.
Payments will be made in phases, meaning selected Lagos residents may receive notifications at different times.
The government has also not announced how long the intervention will last or when payments will end.
6. Will the N50,000 payment continue every month?
The intervention was announced as a monthly cash support programme, with eligible beneficiaries expected to receive N50,000 monthly.
However, the Federal Government has not specified the overall duration of the intervention.
Doro said the programme would be reviewed regularly in response to changes in the cost of living. He added that beneficiaries would be notified directly before any adjustments were made.
7. What should Lagos residents do now?
Residents interested in the intervention should ensure that their National Identification Number and phone details are accurate and accessible.
They should also monitor official government communications and messages from the approved payment providers.
Most importantly, residents should avoid sharing sensitive banking information, PINs or one-time passwords with anyone claiming to facilitate their selection or payment.
The government has maintained that no payment is required to qualify for the intervention.
Background
The Federal Government has previously introduced social intervention programmes aimed at supporting poor and vulnerable households.
In 2016, it launched the National Social Safety Nets Project (NASSP) in collaboration with the World Bank to strengthen Nigeria’s social protection system and provide targeted assistance to poor households.
The project included the National Cash Transfer Programme, which provided financial support to eligible households identified through the National Social Register.
