Man gets 3 weeks community service for stealing phones

A magistrate court in Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has sentenced a 38-year old man, Adewale Adewunmi to three weeks of community service for theft.

Adewunmi, according to the charge sheet with number MM/B/12/2020, had on Thursday, January 24,this year around 1pm at 35 Salamotu Street, Ilasamaja entered the shop of one Miss Lawrence Chika with intention to steal, an offence punishable under section 308(2) Criminal Law of Lagos 2015.

The charge sheet further read that “you Adewunmi at the aforementioned place and time did steal one android phone valued N30,000 and one Gionee Android valued N35,000, properties of Miss Chika, an offence punishable under section 287 Criminal Law of Lagos 2015.”

The prosecutor, Inspector Oje Uagbale, explained that Adewunmi was able to get hold of the cell phones from Chika’s shop when the complainant had gone to ease herself.

He said: “Upon returning to her shop, she saw her phone with the defendant and claimed it but later realised that the second phone which was plugged for charging had gone missing. Upon quizzing Adewunm who still lurked around, he decided to run away which made the complainant raise the alarm and the defendant was apprehended by residents in the community. He was handed over to the police officers of Ilasamaja Police Station from where he was charged to court.”

Based on his statement and plea of guilty, the presiding Magistrate, Olufunmilayo Teluwo pronounced 3 weeks of community service or one month imprisonment as punishment for the defendant.
