A significant milestone was recorded today Friday September 4th 2026, in the renewed drive of the Lagos State Government to expand access to safe, reliable and sustainable potable water as the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), in partnership with WaterAid, formally executed the contract for the rehabilitation of the Ojokoro Mini Water Works with BayRoyal International Limited.
The landmark signing ceremony, held at the LWC Boardroom, Head Office, Ijora, represents a decisive step towards restoring and strengthening water infrastructure in Ojokoro and its environs, with the project expected to positively impact over 100,000 residents of the Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
The ceremony brought together the Management of LWC, representatives of the Ojokoro LCDA, WaterAid, Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO), the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, and BayRoyal International Limited — reflecting a broad institutional commitment to delivering a sustainable water solution for the community.

Declaring the occasion historic, the Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Mukhtaar Temitope Tijani, emphasised that the contract goes beyond the execution of an infrastructure agreement, describing it as a commitment to improving the quality of life of thousands of Lagosians.
Engr. Tijani reiterated the Corporation’s determination to ensure that investments in water infrastructure translate into actual water in the taps of residents, particularly in communities where access to dependable potable water has remained a longstanding challenge.

Speaking on behalf of WaterAid, the Country Director, Ms. Evelyn Mere, described the contract signing as a defining moment in the journey towards sustainable water access in Ojokoro.
She emphasised that the project should be viewed not merely as a construction initiative, but as an investment in public health, human dignity and long-term socioeconomic development.
She highlighted the comprehensive scope of the intervention, which includes civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation rehabilitation, extensive borehole rehabilitation and new drilling, as well as the integration of solar power solutions to enhance the reliability and sustainability of the facility.
The project will also incorporate smart technologies, including real-time pressure monitoring, early leakage detection and automated network management, while an ambitious metering expansion programme is expected to target approximately 72,000 households, supporting improved network efficiency and helping to reduce non-revenue water.
According to WaterAid, the success of the project will ultimately be measured by its ability to improve the everyday lives of residents, strengthen public health outcomes and contribute to sustainable socioeconomic development.
The initiative is also aligned with the aspirations of Sustainable Development Goal 6, which seeks universal access to clean water and sanitation.
Describing the contract signing as “the real start”, Ms. Mere charged the implementation teams and contractors to deliver infrastructure that the people of Ojokoro can depend on for generations.

The Director, Technical Services, Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO), Mr. Olowu Idowu, represented the regulatory perspective at the ceremony, reaffirming the importance of transparency, affordability, sustainability and regulatory compliance in the delivery of water services.
His presence further demonstrated the collaborative institutional framework supporting the project and the shared objective of ensuring that water infrastructure investments deliver sustainable benefits to the people.
Similarly, the Director, Water Resources, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Engr. Oyedele James, who represented the Ministry, linked the project to the broader water supply agenda of the Lagos State Government.
He reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to advancing access to potable water across Lagos and supporting initiatives that contribute to the achievement of SDG 6.
