Libata Disclosed Five Traditional Sports For Open Championship

The maiden edition of the Traditional Sports open championship is scheduled to hold in Abuja.

The Technical Director of the Traditional Sports Federation of Nigeria, Abdullahi Libata, has confirmed that more than 200 athletes will take part in the inaugural Traditional Sports National Open Championship holding from 14 to 16 August 2026 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Speaking ahead of the three-day event, Libata said the championship will feature five traditional sports, Abula, Ayo, Langa, Dambe and Kokowa which is designed to give athletes a platform to showcase their skills.

According to him, the competition will also serve as a key avenue for identifying and nurturing talents from across the country.

“We are expecting over 200 athletes to participate in the inaugural National Open Championship,” he said.

“Five traditional sports Abula, Ayo, Langa, Dambe and Kokowa will feature at the championship.”

Libata noted that under the leadership of the federation’s President, Senator Obinna Ogba, the Traditional Sports Federation of Nigeria remains committed to developing and repositioning the sport Federation.

“Under the leadership of Senator Obinna Ogba, the federation is focused on taking traditional sports to the next level. We want to ensure that these sports receive the recognition and development they deserve, both nationally and internationally.”
