Lagos State University (LASU) has intensified its commitment to scientific research and renewable energy innovation with a guest lecture exploring the application of nanotechnology in improving solar cell efficiency.

The lecture, organised by the Faculty of Science on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, featured Professor Genene Tessema Mola of the Department of Physics, School of Chemistry and Physics, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Held at the S. L. Edu Lecture Theatre on LASU’s main campus in Ojo, the lecture was titled “Nanostructured Materials as a Mechanism for Collection of Photocurrents in Thin Film Polymer Solar Cells.”

Speaking on the subject, Mola explained how nanostructured materials could enhance light absorption and improve photocurrent collection in thin-film polymer solar cells, potentially increasing their efficiency and performance.

He highlighted the prospects of polymer-based solar cells as lightweight, flexible and potentially cost-effective alternatives to conventional solar technologies, stressing the importance of materials science in developing innovative and sustainable energy solutions.

The visiting scholar also underscored the significance of international academic exchanges in promoting knowledge sharing, research collaboration and cultural understanding.

Reflecting on his experience in Nigeria, Mola said his visit had challenged some negative perceptions he previously held about the country, highlighting the value of personal interactions and cross-cultural engagements.

In her remarks, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening research, innovation and international academic partnerships.

Her welcome address, delivered by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Anthony Ojekale, emphasised the importance of engaging international scholars in advancing scientific knowledge and creating opportunities for collaborative research.

Earlier, the convener of the Faculty Lecture Series and Research Partnership Committee, Professor Akintayo Ogundajo, presented the guest lecturer’s citation.

The university noted that the lecture provided students and academics with an opportunity to engage with emerging scientific developments and research approaches relevant to renewable energy, technological advancement and sustainable development.

The event was organised by the Faculty of Science’s Guest Lecture Series and Research Partnership Committee as part of the university’s efforts to promote scientific education, research collaboration and international academic exchange.
