The Lagos State Sports Commission has intervened following the circulation of a viral video in which a concerned mother raised the alarm over an incident involving her young daughter and alleged obstruction by local government officials during preparations for a major sporting event.
The video, which attracted widespread attention on social media, highlighted concerns about the challenges young athletes can face when administrative processes and inter-agency misunderstandings interfere with their participation in sporting competitions.
Responding to the development, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, on Wednesday morning met with the affected athlete and her mother to establish the facts surrounding the incident and explore immediate measures to address the situation.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the Commission to listen directly to the family, understand the circumstances that led to the athlete’s inability to participate in the event and reassure the young sports talent of the government’s commitment to her development.
The athlete’s mother, while appreciating the support her daughter had received from the Lagos State Sports Commission, expressed concern over the role of other government institutions in situations involving young athletes.
She urged the Commission to strengthen communication and awareness among Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), particularly local government authorities, so that administrative actions do not inadvertently frustrate the aspirations of young people who are working hard to build careers in sports.
According to her, young athletes require an enabling environment where government institutions work together to identify, encourage and protect their talents rather than create obstacles that could discourage them from pursuing their dreams.
Fatodu, in response, assured the family that the Commission would engage directly with the local government agency involved to address the matter and prevent a recurrence.
He said the incident had also provided an opportunity for the state government to examine existing systems and strengthen institutional safeguards for young athletes.
The DG outlined a series of measures aimed at ensuring that promising athletes are adequately protected from bureaucratic challenges.
Policy safeguards
Fatodu said the Commission would activate a framework designed to protect young athletes from administrative interference that could prevent them from participating in recognised sporting activities.
The framework, he indicated, would provide clearer procedures for handling issues involving athletes, parents, local authorities and sporting bodies.
Direct communication with athletes and parents
The Commission also plans to strengthen direct communication channels between its officials, athletes and their parents.
The initiative is expected to enable parents and young athletes to quickly reach the appropriate officials whenever they encounter administrative or logistical difficulties that could affect their participation in competitions.
Stronger inter-agency awareness
Fatodu further stressed the need for greater collaboration between the Sports Commission and other government institutions.
He said MDAs and local government authorities would be better sensitised on the importance of supporting young sporting talents and understanding the potential consequences of decisions that could disrupt their participation in competitions.
The intervention comes amid growing emphasis by the Lagos State Government on youth development and the discovery of sporting talents capable of representing the state and Nigeria at national and international competitions.
Fatodu said the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remained committed to creating opportunities for young people to discover their talents, develop their skills and compete at the highest levels.
“The vision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is to discover and nurture young talent to their fullest potential. Any action that undermines youth empowerment through sports is a disservice to our collective talent development goals,” Fatodu said.
He stressed that the development of young athletes should not be viewed solely from the perspective of individual competitions, but as part of a broader talent-development strategy capable of producing future champions and role models.
The Commission’s intervention is therefore expected to go beyond resolving the immediate controversy, with the agency signalling its intention to use the incident as a basis for improving coordination between sports authorities and other arms of government.
For the young athlete at the centre of the controversy, the intervention could provide renewed encouragement to continue pursuing her sporting ambitions, while the wider development has opened a fresh conversation about the need to ensure that promising young talents are not lost to avoidable administrative barriers.
The Sports Commission reiterated its commitment to working with parents, athletes, coaches, local governments and other stakeholders to build a more responsive sporting environment in Lagos where talent can be identified early, properly nurtured and given the opportunity to flourish.
