Phone users in Lagos and across Nigeria can now easily verify whether their mobile devices are approved for use on local networks, following the introduction of a new USSD service by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The Device Checker allows consumers to confirm the Type Approval and verification status of their handsets by simply dialling *315# and selecting the option to check the device. An approved and verified phone typically returns a confirmation that it is “NCC Type Approved and verified for use on Nigerian mobile networks.”

The service forms part of an enhanced Type Approval Compliance framework that took effect on 7 October 2026. It is designed to protect consumers from counterfeit and non-compliant devices, strengthen network integrity and ensure that equipment sold and used in the country meets required technical standards.

Users can also access the checker online at www.ncc.gov.ng/devicechecker or call the toll-free number 315 for assistance. When verifying a different handset, the 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number may be required; this can be displayed by dialling *#06# on the device.

According to the NCC, phones already connected to Nigerian mobile networks before the system commenced were automatically verified and generally require no further action from their owners. The Commission has advised buyers, particularly those purchasing second-hand phones, to verify devices before making payment.

The framework covers smartphones, feature phones, cellular tablets and other SIM-enabled equipment. Non-compliant devices risk being denied access to Nigerian networks in future. Officials emphasised that the service is solely for verification purposes and does not involve surveillance of personal data or user activity.

The initiative offers Lagos residents a practical tool to make more informed purchasing decisions and avoid the risks associated with fake or substandard phones.
