Lagos Economy Gains Global Payment Access as Card Spending Limit Hits $40,000
Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, is among the places where the gradual restoration of access to international financial services could have a significant impact on businesses and residents who engage in cross-border transactions.
Over the past three years, Nigerians have reportedly moved from a period when local bank cards faced severe restrictions on international transactions to a situation where some cards can now be used for payments outside the country.
The change has been described as one of the notable developments in Nigeria’s financial sector, particularly for Lagos, which serves as the country’s major centre for commerce, banking, trade and international business.
According to the remarks, international card spending limits have increased progressively—from zero to $5,000, $10,000 and $20,000, and now as much as $40,000 per quarter for eligible customers.
The development could be particularly relevant to Lagos-based businesses and professionals whose activities involve international travel, imports, digital services and other cross-border payments.
The progression, according to the remarks, reflects the gradual restoration of Nigerians’ access to the global financial system after years of restrictions.
However, the $40,000 quarterly limit does not necessarily apply to every Nigerian bank customer, as individual banks may impose different limits and eligibility requirements.
