The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has received 10 new waste compactor trucks from the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority in a move aimed at improving waste collection and promoting a cleaner environment across the state.

Speaking during the official handover ceremony on Wednesday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, described the donation as a strong example of collaboration among government agencies in tackling environmental challenges facing Lagos.

Wahab said the gesture reflects the growing partnership between ministries, agencies and the private sector in addressing the environmental pressures associated with rapid urbanisation and population growth.

According to him, Lagos generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, making continuous investment in infrastructure, equipment and innovative waste management solutions essential.

He noted that the state government, through the Ministry and the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has invested significantly in improving waste collection and disposal systems.

The commissioner highlighted several ongoing initiatives, including strengthening Private Sector Participation (PSP) operations, expanding recycling programmes, deploying marine waste evacuation teams, promoting waste-to-wealth projects and introducing modern waste management technologies.

Wahab explained that Lagos is gradually moving away from the traditional “collect and dump” approach to a more sustainable zero-waste model where waste is treated as a resource rather than a burden.

He revealed that the state has signed a number of agreements with local and international partners to divert waste from landfills through recycling, reuse and resource recovery. According to him, these partnerships are expected to remove nearly 5,000 metric tonnes from the over 13,000 metric tonnes of waste generated daily in Lagos.

He added that the projects would significantly reduce pressure on landfill sites while creating economic value from waste materials.

The commissioner described the donation as timely, especially as the state intensifies environmental renewal efforts and the reintroduced Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise.

According to him, the new compactors will improve waste evacuation, reduce collection turnaround time and enhance service delivery across communities.

“These compactors will be strategically deployed to critical locations across the state, particularly areas with high waste generation and communities requiring additional evacuation support,” Wahab said.

He commended the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority for supporting environmental sustainability and urged other organisations to partner with the government in promoting cleaner and healthier communities.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority, Mr. Bashir Abiola Are, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to initiatives that improve residents’ quality of life.

He said the agency’s intervention goes beyond its regulatory role and extends to supporting education, healthcare and environmental sustainability programmes.

According to him, a clean environment is vital to public health and overall well-being, adding that the donation aligns with the vision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat to build a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.

While describing the donation as important, Are acknowledged that the waste management needs of a megacity like Lagos remain enormous.

He noted that even hundreds of additional compactor trucks would still be needed to fully meet the state’s growing demands but assured residents that the agency would continue to support initiatives aimed at strengthening waste management and environmental sanitation.
