Lagos Assembly Recommends Holistic Approach Against Domestic Violence

The Lagos State House of Assembly, LAHA, has expressed concern over incidents of domestic violence urging for a holistic approach in tackling the condition.

The lawmakers during a plenary on Thursday joined a campaign initiative organized by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, tagged “Turn Lagos Purple”.

At the session, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, mentioned that it is imperative to address the causes of the unwanted situation and proffer lasting solutions.

Obasa recommended continuous awareness programs through public engagements. He opined that such measure would contribute to a more comprehensive approach in tackling the issue.

Lawmaker representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituecy 02, Ladi Ajomale, submitted that certain cultural norms and religious factors, whether consciously or unconsciously, perpetuate sexual violence in communities.

Ajomale stressed on the severe impact of domestic violence on individuals’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The legislator urged for enhanced prevention campaigns, particularly those involving men in the fight against gender-based violence.

Lawmaker who represents Amuwo-Odofin Constituency 01, Foluke Oshafile, while commending the state’s efforts in combating the unlawful act, advocated for strengthening laws regulating criminal conduct.

Oshafile disclosed that a better engaging of men and boys in the society on do’s and don’ts on the matter will contributing immensely to curb the negative situation. She also called for an improved data collection to enhance understanding.

In addition, the lawmaker recommended decentralization of services and greater community involvement.

Abiodun Tobun who represents Epe Constituecy 01 added that the state needs to draw attention to other forms of abuse, including sibling battery and femicide.

Tobun also emphasized the need to introduce values and norms into school curricula and engaging religious leaders as stakeholders in tackling the dastadly act.

The Assembly lauded the First Lady of Lagos State, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, for her Boy-Child Campaign and reiterated the importance of reinforcing family systems and instilling proper values in children.

In a show of solidarity, the House members adorned purple ribbons, symbolizing their commitment to domestic violence awareness.
