Lagos Airport Monorail to Link Ikeja Railway Station, MMIA Terminal 1
By Emmanuel Daniji
The Federal Government has approved the design of a proposed monorail project that will connect Ikeja Railway Station to Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the development in a post on X, stating that the design received approval following an assessment involving the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and engineering teams from both organisations.
According to Keyamo, the monorail will transport commuters and air passengers from Ikeja Railway Station, the terminal point of the Lagos Red Line, to the airport terminal, which is currently undergoing reconstruction.
The proposed monorail will have five stations: Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station and MMIA Airport Station.
The project is expected to improve connectivity between Lagos’ rail network and the international airport, making it easier for passengers to access the aviation facility.
Keyamo described the monorail as an integral part of the airport’s reconstruction, given the facility’s importance as Nigeria’s major international aviation gateway.
The planned connection is expected to provide an additional transport option for air travellers and other commuters, particularly those seeking to connect from the Lagos Red Line to the airport.
However, the minister’s announcement did not disclose the estimated cost of the project, when construction would begin or its expected completion date.
Further details on the implementation of the monorail project are expected as the Federal Government advances its plans for improved airport infrastructure and transport connectivity.
