Gunmen Kill Lagos NURTW Organising Secretary as Police Begin Investigation
The Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for gunmen who shot and killed the Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya.
Ajiboye was reportedly attacked along Ikorodu Road while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi.
He was rushed to St. Nicholas Hospital on Lagos Island after sustaining gunshot wounds but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Following the announcement of his death, tension erupted around the hospital as supporters of the late union official reportedly prevented police officers from accessing the facility to recover his body.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said investigations had commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
He added that security personnel had been deployed to strategic locations across the state to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
“Investigation is ongoing to get the perpetrators. The Command has also deployed personnel to strategic locations to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order,” the police spokesperson said.
According to reports, the attackers intercepted Ajiboye’s vehicle on Ikorodu Road and opened fire on the car, leaving multiple bullet holes on the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle.
Initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack after sustaining injuries. However, he later died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Reacting to the incident, Lagos State NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye’s death as a painful loss to the union.
In a tribute shared on social media, Adekunle said the late union leader was a loyal ally, trusted friend and committed member of the organisation.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable and committed ally,” he said.
Adekunle added that Ajiboye’s dedication to the union and his unwavering support for TeamSego and SegoNation would always be remembered.
