Driver Killed After SUV Somersaults in Lagos
A motorist lost his life in a tragic lone-vehicle accident along the busy Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos during the early hours of Saturday.
The crash occurred at Charity Bus Stop, inward Iyana Isolo, when a Honda Pilot SUV reportedly lost control and overturned several times before coming to a stop.
According to preliminary reports from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the impact of the crash was severe, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged and trapping the driver inside the wreckage.
Emergency responders from LASTMA, who were on traffic monitoring duty in the area, quickly arrived at the scene and coordinated rescue and recovery efforts alongside officers from the Mosafejo Police Division.
Despite their swift response, the driver was confirmed dead at the scene.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq said initial findings suggest the vehicle suddenly veered out of control, causing the repeated somersaults.
Traffic officials worked to remove the wreckage and maintain the flow of vehicles on the expressway to prevent further incidents.
The deceased’s remains were later evacuated by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit and taken to a public mortuary, while the damaged SUV was handed over to the police for further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the victim’s family and urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, avoid excessive speeding, and exercise caution on the roads.
The latest accident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major Lagos highways, particularly the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, which has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent years.
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of responsible driving to reduce preventable road tragedies.
