Desola Afod, the former wife of Nollywood director Kunle Afod, has retracted her warning to Yoruba film practitioners following backlash over comments accusing members of the industry of disrespecting her.
Desola faced criticism on social media after complaining that some actors addressed her by her name without showing her what she considered appropriate respect.
The 44-year-old’s remarks drew reactions from several actors, including Wumi Toriola, who criticised her for appearing to generalise the alleged disrespect to the entire Yoruba film industry rather than identifying those involved.
Wumi also advised Desola to consider dropping the Afod surname in favour of her father’s name, given that she and Kunle Afod are no longer married.
Responding to the criticism in a post on her Instagram page, Desola withdrew her earlier general statement, clarifying that she did not intend to accuse every practitioner in the industry.
“Whatever statement I made generally concerning ‘Àwọn ọmọ Tíátíà’, I hereby retract and take it back. I don’t mean to generalise or refer to everyone in the industry. The few people that did me dirty know themselves,” she wrote.
However, Desola stood by her decision to retain the Afod surname despite Wumi’s comments about her marital status.
“One thing remains unchanged: MY NAME IS STILL DESOLA AFOD, CELEB WIFE, TILL THE END OF TIME 100,” she said.
The exchange has generated further discussion on social media, with the dispute touching on respect among colleagues in the Yoruba movie industry, public criticism and Desola’s continued use of her former husband’s surname.
