The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC, has arraigned twelve commercial sex workers in court for indulging in prosecution.
During proceedings at the LAGESC Special Offences Court in Bolade, Oshodi on Wednesday, the litigants, who commited the act at Obalende area of the state were sentenced to eight months in prison.
The court held that the convicts were prosecuted on charges bordering on prostitution and breach of peace.
Head of LAGESC, Olaniyi Cole, said that the prosecution and conviction of the offenders was part of concerted efforts by the Lagos State Government to reduce environmental infractions.
Cole said: “The THEMES agenda of Mr. Governor clearly states the need for Lagos to be habitable for business and the situation at Obalende has deteriorated over time, prompting the need for us to launch a large-scale enforcement operation against these nefarious elements that want to desecrate our environment which resulted in arrests and eventual convictions’.”
LAGESC revealed the names of the convicts as: Oluwaseun Durojaye, 20, Joy Felix, 24, Opeyemi Azeez, 25, Precious Mathew, 24, Happiness Kingsley, 24, Theresa Edet, 30, Ayo Olanrewaju, 20, Monica Ebuka, 21, Blessing James, 22, and Favour Samuel, 34.
Others include: Janet Ighumba, 24, Marvis Ifeoma, 32, Adeyanju Clara, 24, Favour Johnson, 34, Joy Rafael, 24, Promise Joseph, 23, Favour Ajoor, 28, Joy Onyekachi, 28 and Emmanuela Friday, 20.
The agency also informed that the offences contradict Section 142(1)(a)(b) and 168(1) (d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.
Furthermore, other seven suspects who pleaded not guilty to the charges were remanded in prison custody until December 18 for further hearing.
Cole state’s that the agency remains resolute in curbing nefarious elements in the state, stressing that erring individuals would be held to face full wrath of the law.
