Apply Now: TETFund National Research Fund 2026 Grant
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has opened applications for its 2026 National Research Fund (NRF) Grant Cycle.
This comes with ₦10 billion approved to support research projects addressing key national and global development challenges.
The latest funding allocation represents a 64.2 per cent increase from the ₦6.09 billion awarded to 174 research projects under the 2025 cycle.
TETFund said the 2026 funding will support research across 30 priority thematic areas, grouped under three broad categories: Humanities and Social Sciences; Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation; and Cross-Cutting research areas.
Who Can Apply?
The opportunity is primarily open to lecturers in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria serving as Principal Investigators (PIs) for proposed research projects. TETFund requires the Principal Investigator to be institution-based and responsible for leading the research team.
Researchers interested in the grant must begin the process by submitting a research concept note through the TETFund National Research Fund online platform.
Only concept notes that are assessed and considered fundable will progress to the next stage, where successful Principal Investigators will be invited to submit detailed full proposals.
30 Priority Research Areas
The 2026 NRF covers a wide range of issues under its three thematic categories. These include areas such as:
- Citizenship and national integration
- Conflict, defence and security
- Economic development and globalisation
- Education and human capital
- Gender, equity and social inclusion
- Governance, politics, law and ethics
- Science, engineering and technology
- Clean and affordable energy
- Entrepreneurship and wealth creation
- Environment, housing, urban and regional development
- Innovation and technology
- Resource governance
- National systems of innovation
The research themes are designed to encourage studies capable of generating evidence and solutions to pressing national development challenges.
Application Deadline
The TETFund NRF portal opened for concept-note submissions on August 31, 2026, and applicants have until October 15, 2026 to submit their concept notes.
TETFund has specifically warned that there will be no extension of the deadline.
Researchers are advised to carefully review the official research brief and application guidelines before submitting their concept notes.
