Apapa Tank Farm Fire Triggers Emergency Response
Tension gripped Lagos’ bustling Apapa industrial corridor on Friday after a fire broke out at the Bono Energy Tank Farm in the Ibafon area, prompting an immediate multi-agency emergency response to avert what could have become a major disaster.
The blaze, which erupted within the Best Energy Tank Farm complex in the early hours of the day, was reportedly preceded by a loud explosion-like sound that sent workers and residents fleeing for safety. Thick plumes of smoke billowed into the sky as fears mounted that the flames could spread to neighbouring fuel storage tanks in one of Nigeria’s largest petroleum depot clusters.
Firefighters from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service swiftly mobilised to the scene, launching coordinated efforts to contain the inferno and shield nearby facilities from the advancing flames.
Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that emergency crews successfully prevented the fire from extending to adjoining tank farms, significantly reducing the risk of a wider industrial catastrophe.
She said firefighters remained on-site working to completely extinguish the blaze while prioritising the safety of personnel, residents and critical infrastructure within the Apapa tank farm zone.
Despite the intensity of the incident, authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries had been recorded as of the latest update. The full extent of the damage to the affected facility, however, is yet to be determined.
Officials also disclosed that the cause of the fire remains unknown. A comprehensive investigation will commence once emergency responders declare the site safe for assessment.
At the time of reporting, neither Bono Energy Tank Farm nor Best Energy Tank Farm had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The Apapa tank farm district serves as a strategic hub for Nigeria’s fuel storage and distribution network, making the swift containment of the fire crucial to protecting lives, preventing supply disruptions and safeguarding vital energy infrastructure. Authorities have advised members of the public to steer clear of the area while emergency operations continue.
