AFCON 2027 Race: Super Eagles Rattles Madagascar In Uyo

Nigeria came from a goal down to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening fixture of the 2027 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Friday night.

George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor goals cancelled out Madagascar first half strike to ignite a win for Nigeria.

Ehsan Kari put Madagascar ahead in the 16th minute with a free header which followed a quick corner kick setup.

The goal erected a damning silence at the stadium as the home side went behind through an early strike.

Madagascar had series of chances to double their lead in the game following their 16th minute goal.

Midfielder, Alex Iwobi set up debutant, Ilenikhena with a defense splitting pass who finished off the move with a left footed strike that sealed the equalizer for the Eagles on the stroke of halftime.

On the return from the break, Madagascar winger, El Hadary Raheriniaina threw away the best chance of the game from a one on one situation against Nigeria’s goalkeper, Stanley Nwabali.

The introduction of Usor, Moses Simon, Taiwo Awoniyi and Tolu Arokodare in the second half provided the much needed energy for the Nigeria while they search for the winner on home soil.

Tricky winger, Usor raced through on goal from the halfway line as he dribbled his way to send a low effort which gave the Super Eagles the lead in the 65th minute and also his maiden goal in the national team.

The win gives the Super Eagles three point on the log as they face Guinea Bissau in their second game in Morocco on Tuesday, September 29.
