Abiodun Calls For Improved Publicity, Broadcast Of WAFCON 2026

Nigeria midfielder, Deborah Abiodun has called for greater publicity and broadcast coverage of African women’s football and praised the team’s fighting spirit and collective effort after Nigeria secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Zambia in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 Group C clash at the Al Madina Stadium, in Rabat.
The win, sealed by an early Asisat Oshoala goal, marked Nigeria’s first points of the tournament following an opening defeat to Malawi.
The Super Falcons had to dig deep after being reduced to 10 players following a first-half red card, yet held firm to claim the three points and keep their knockout hopes alive.
Reflecting on the hard-fought contest, Abiodun highlighted the challenge posed by the numerical disadvantage which kept the Falcons on their toes for the remainder of the encounter.
“It was a tough fight, especially after we got a red card in the first half,” Abiodun said.
“I’m proud of the team’s effort in securing our first win of the tournament. Everyone contributed both the players on the pitch and those on the bench. We all came into the game with one objective, which was to move forward and make Nigeria proud, as always.”
She singled out the team’s response in working with unity and teamwork which made the second half as the decisive factor for Nigeria to grind out the win.
“Going into the second half with one player down was a real test for us because she’s an important part of the team. But our team spirit came to life. Everyone had to work harder, make extra tackles and cover more ground in their respective positions. That unity made the difference.”
Abiodun also expressed gratitude to Nigerian supporters and called for greater visibility for the women’s game across the continent.
“We appreciate every fan who took out time to support us. We hope to see even more supporters behind the team as the tournament progresses. We also hope there will be greater broadcast coverage for African women’s football because the game continues to grow and deserves more visibility.”
The result leaves the Super Falcons in contention in Group C as they prepare for their final group fixture against Egypt, with the squad determined to build on the momentum and continue making the nation proud.
