By Emmanuel Daniji
The family of late Nollywood actor Steve Echendu has announced plans to lay him to rest in November, as colleagues and loved ones continue to mourn his death.
The 52-year-old actor, who was also a producer, director and production manager, will be buried in his hometown of Umuokwara Umuohiri, Isiala Mbano, Imo State.
In a funeral announcement signed by his son, Kamsiyochukwu Echendu, the family outlined a three-day programme to honour the late actor.
The activities will begin with a wake-keep on November 27, followed by the burial on November 28. A thanksgiving and outing service will take place on November 29, bringing the funeral programme to an end.
The family paid tribute to him in a heartfelt message, describing his life as a blessing and his memory as a treasure. He is survived by his wife, children and brothers.
Echendu’s death has drawn tributes from colleagues who remember him for his contributions to Nollywood during the industry’s early years, when the home-video sector was growing into a major part of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Veteran actress Clarion Chukwura, who mourned him in a social media post, described him as a major pillar in Nollywood’s formative years. She praised his professionalism, hard work and respectful attitude, particularly in his role as a production manager.
Beyond production work, Echendu also featured in films, with credits including Knockout Blessing, Fury and Infant at Heart.
His death was announced shortly after the news of veteran actor Francis Duru’s passing, making the period a difficult one for members of the Nollywood community.
As friends, colleagues and family prepare to give him a final farewell, Echendu is being remembered not only for his work on screen but also for the role he played behind the scenes in the development of the Nigerian film industry.
The family has not disclosed the cause of his death.
