Keyamo Approves Design of Lagos Airport Monorail, Five Stations Planned
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, has announced the approval of the design of the proposed Lagos Airport monorail, which will connect the Ikeja Railway Station to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).
Keyamo disclosed this in an update following a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and engineering teams from both organisations.
According to the minister, the meeting appraised and approved the design of the monorail, which is expected to provide a transport link for commuters and air travellers between the Ikeja Railway Station, where the Lagos Red Line terminates, and the new terminal point at MMIA Terminal 1, which is currently undergoing reconstruction.
He said the proposed monorail would have five stations along its route to facilitate passenger movement and improve access to the airport.
The stations are Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station and MMIA Airport Station.
Keyamo described the monorail as an integral component of the reconstruction of the airport, which serves as one of Nigeria’s major aviation gateways.
The proposed connection is expected to link the airport more directly with Lagos’ urban rail network, giving passengers and other commuters an additional transportation option for accessing the facility.
The project also forms part of efforts to improve transportation connectivity around the airport as the reconstruction of Terminal 1 progresses.
However, the minister’s announcement did not provide details on the estimated cost of the monorail, its construction timeline or the expected date for the commencement of passenger services.
