Apply: Villgro Africa MedTech Programme Seeks Medical Technology Startups
Medical technology startups in East Africa developing innovative healthcare devices and equipment can apply for the Villgro Africa MedTech Innovation Programme.
This is a 24-month initiative designed to help locally led businesses strengthen their products and prepare for market expansion.
The programme targets invention-based enterprises developing technology-driven medical solutions to address healthcare challenges, particularly in underserved communities. It aims to bridge the gap between promising prototypes and commercially viable products that can improve healthcare delivery.
According to programme information published by MSME Africa, six enterprises are expected to be selected for tailored technical and business support.
What Does the Programme Offer?
Selected companies will receive customised assistance to improve their products, strengthen business operations and prepare their innovations for wider adoption.
Support areas include:
- Product development and validation: Technical guidance to improve product design, functionality, testing and performance.
- Clinical and regulatory readiness: Assistance with regulatory pathways, clinical evidence requirements and quality management.
- Manufacturing readiness: Support to improve production processes, supplier management and quality control.
- Business and market development: Guidance on pricing, business models, distribution channels and strategic partnerships.
- Investment readiness: Assistance with funding strategies, business milestones and preparation for potential investors.
The programme focuses on practical venture development and technical assistance. A cash grant is not guaranteed for every selected participant, so applicants should confirm the specific funding arrangements with Villgro Africa.
Who Can Apply?
The opportunity is open to locally led medical technology companies based in or primarily operating from the following East African countries:
- Kenya
- Uganda
- Tanzania

- Burundi
- Ethiopia
Eligible applicants should meet the following requirements:

- Have a founding team with technical and business leadership capabilities.
- Possess at least a functional proof of concept or working prototype.
- Demonstrate engagement with intended users, healthcare professionals, medical facilities or patients.
- Clearly explain the healthcare problem being addressed and the expected benefits of the innovation.

The programme is best suited to businesses at the prototype, validation, pre-commercialisation or early-market stage. Businesses offering only distribution services or generic wellness and administrative software without a core medical technology invention may not qualify.
