AFCON 2027 Race: Eric Chelle Admits Guinea Bissau Superiority Over Super Eagles

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has admitted that Guinea-Bissau deserved their victory over the Super Eagles, acknowledging that his team’s performance dropped after a promising start.

The Super Eagles began the encounter positively but struggled to maintain their early momentum as Guinea-Bissau grew into the game and eventually secured the 3-0 win at the 24th of September Stadium, Bissau.

Chelle wasn’t pleased with how the performance of the players dropped despite having a bright start in the match.

“We started the game well, but then our performance dropped. In football, anything can happen. Guinea-Bissau played better and deservedly won,” Chelle said.

The gaffer refused to swim in the shallows of defeat while he believes Nigeria must accept the consequences of being second fiddle in the game.

“The Guinea-Bissau team played better and deserved a victory. We have to acknowledge the defeat.”

He admitted the loss threatened his faith with the team but he gave his assurance of not underestimating any team going forward.

“Losing in Guinea-Bissau was a great test for me. As the coach of Nigeria, I will continue to work hard, without underestimating any opponent.”

Chelle also pledged to address the shortcomings exposed by the defeat and ensure the Eagles are better prepared for their next outing.

“We will continue to work, better prepare the team, and do everything to win the next game and bring joy to the Nigerian people.”

The defeat leaves the Super Eagles in second place in the AFCON qualifiers Group L with three points, while Guinea Bissau tops the standings with six points.
