41-Year-Old Man Remanded Over Alleged Rape of Elderly Woman in Agbowa

A 41-year-old man, Adeniyi Matthew, has been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court over the alleged rape of a 72-year-old woman in the Mosafejo area of Agbowa, Lagos State.
Matthew was arraigned before Magistrate M.O. Tanimola on a one-count charge of rape, an offence allegedly contrary to Section 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
According to the charge sheet filed by the Commissioner of Police, the alleged offence occurred on August 5, 2026, at about 2pm in the Mosafejo area of Agbowa, within the jurisdiction of the Lagos Magisterial District.
The prosecutor, ASP Lucky Ihehie, told the court that the defendant allegedly had sexual intercourse with the 72-year-old woman without her consent.
The prosecutor said the alleged offence attracts life imprisonment upon conviction under the relevant provision of the Lagos State Criminal Law.
Matthew’s plea was not taken after the prosecution asked the court to refer the case to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
Following the submission, Magistrate Tanimola ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Correctional Centre in Kirikiri pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice.
The magistrate also noted that the alleged offence falls within the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The case was investigated by the Gender Section of the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, with Cpl. Osho Adetola serving as the Investigating Police Officer.
The matter was brought under the supervision of CSP Omolola Odutola.
The court is expected to await the DPP’s advice before determining the next step in the case.
Matthew is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
