Appiah Strengthens 22Bet’s African Football Network With Other Global Stars
By Saheed Afolabi
Ghanaian football legend Stephen Appiah has been named 22Bet’s new Global Ambassador, becoming the latest high-profile addition to the brand’s growing African Football Network.
The former Black Stars captain joins Togo’s Emmanuel Adebayor, Kenya’s Victor Wanyama and Nigeria’s Daniel Amokachi in a collective that spans generations and regions of African football. The partnership centres on fan engagement, responsible gambling awareness and community-focused initiatives.
As Global Ambassador, Appiah will appear in football campaigns, exclusive content and supporter events, while also supporting programmes that promote responsible gambling and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects across communities.
### Four Icons, One Network
The ambassadors share a common thread: careers that made them household names across Africa and beyond.
Adebayor built an outstanding European résumé with Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Real Madrid and Monaco. The former Togo captain was named African Footballer of the Year in 2008 and remains one of his country’s most celebrated sporting figures.
Wanyama made history as the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League. After establishing himself at Southampton, the midfielder moved to Tottenham Hotspur and became one of East Africa’s most prominent football exports.
Amokachi was a central figure in Nigeria’s golden generation that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and Olympic gold at Atlanta 1996. The forward enjoyed successful spells with Everton (where he won the 1995 FA Cup), Club Brugge and Beşiktaş.
Appiah now completes the quartet of global Africa stars to team up with 22Bet
The Captain Who Made Ghana Believe
Nicknamed “Tornado,” Appiah holds a unique place in Ghanaian football history. He captained the Black Stars to their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006, ending decades of near-misses for one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses.
In Germany, Ghana emerged from a tough group containing eventual champions Italy, the Czech Republic and the United States before reaching the Round of 16. Four years later, Appiah was part of the side that reached the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, coming within a penalty of becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.
His leadership and enduring connection with supporters across Ghana and the continent will underpin his new role.
“Football has given me an extraordinary connection with people in Ghana, across Africa and in many other parts of the world. I have always believed that the influence you gain through football should be used positively, and that is one of the reasons I am excited about this partnership with 22Bet,” Appiah said.
“Becoming a Global Ambassador is not only about representing a brand. It is also an opportunity to engage football fans, encourage responsible choices and work on projects that can make a real difference in our communities.”
From Accra to Europe’s Biggest Stages
Appiah’s club career matched his international achievements. After breaking through at Accra Hearts of Oak, he moved to Italy and played for Udinese, Parma, Brescia and Juventus during a golden era for Serie A. He won the Coppa Italia with Parma in 2002 before competing at the highest level with Juventus.
He later became a key figure at Fenerbahçe, helping the Turkish giants claim the Süper Lig title in 2006/07 and the Turkish Super Cup in 2007. His résumé also includes a FIFA U-17 World Cup triumph with Ghana and appearances at the Olympic Games.
Football, Responsibility and Community Impact
While football remains central to the role, 22Bet emphasises that the partnership extends beyond promotion. Responsible gambling awareness will feature prominently, with Appiah supporting initiatives that frame gambling strictly as adult entertainment and encourage informed choices, self-control and awareness of risk.
CSR programmes will also form a core pillar, using Appiah’s profile to support communities and create opportunities, particularly for young people.
A 22Bet spokesperson said: “Stephen Appiah represents many of the values we want this partnership to stand for leadership, excellence, responsibility and a genuine connection with people. His influence goes far beyond football, particularly across Ghana and Africa.
“We are delighted to welcome him to the 22Bet family as our Global Ambassador. Together, we want to create memorable football experiences for supporters while also using this partnership as a platform to promote responsible gambling and support communities through meaningful CSR programmes.”
### A Growing African Connection
Appiah’s arrival further strengthens 22Bet’s African Football Network. Between them, the four ambassadors have represented Ghana, Togo, Kenya and Nigeria at the World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations, Olympic Games and some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Their careers link different eras of African football from Amokachi’s 1990s success with Nigeria and Appiah’s leadership of Ghana’s breakthrough World Cup generation, to Adebayor’s Premier League prominence and Wanyama’s pioneering path from Kenya to the English top flight.
The platform aims to turn that shared heritage into fan engagement, responsible gambling messaging and practical community initiatives.
