Chairman of United Bank for Africa, UBA, Tony Elumelu, has corrected a graduate trainee who addressed him simply as “Tony” during the induction of 5,000 newly recruited staff of the bank.

The incident occurred during the induction programme when one of the newly recruited employees took the microphone and referred to the UBA chairman by his first name.

Apparently surprised by the manner of address, Elumelu asked the trainee to correct herself.

However, when given another opportunity to address him, the trainee again referred to him as “Tony.”

Elumelu subsequently explained his preference for being addressed respectfully, noting that he does not subscribe to what he described as “Oyinbo” culture.

The exchange, captured in a video that has gone viral on social media, has sparked reactions among Nigerians, with many debating workplace etiquette, generational differences and the appropriate way to address senior executives in the country’s corporate environment.
