World Cup Playoffs: Madugu Turns Focus To South Africa Encounter After Nigeria’s WAFCON Elimination

Nigeria head coach Justin Madugu says the Super Falcons must quickly regroup and prepare for their World Cup playoff against South Africa after suffering a costly setback at the Women’s Africa Cup Of Nations (WAFCON).
The Falcons were humbled with the 1-0 loss to Cameroon in the quarter final of the 2026 WAFCON at the Stade Larbi Zaouli, Casablanca which ended their title defense and qualification to the World Cup which they have to go through the tedious playoffs stage.
Madugu acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the team but insisted Nigeria cannot afford to waste another opportunity as they look to secure their place at the World Cup through the playoffs.
“We have another game which is the playoffs against South Africa, we will go back, watch their games, go back to the drawing board and come up with a plan that will help us because we can’t afford to drop the second opportunity. We have to give it our best,” Madugu said.
The coach also revealed that the technical team will conduct a thorough assessment of the squad before facing the South Africans, with limited time available to make adjustments.
“It’s quite natural that when things like this happen, you have to do an overhaul assessment of the team and decide on what to do because we have limited time before the next game against South Africa.”
Madugu’s comments point to a possible rethink of his squad and tactics ahead of the crucial playoff, with Nigeria needing to respond quickly to the disappointment of their latest result.
The coach also opened the door to changes in goal, advocating that competition for places remains important after a costly error.
“There’s nothing bad in exploring other players. Chiamaka has been a good goalkeeper even in her club. Anybody can make mistakes at any time and then it could be costly just like today.”
With the South Africa playoff now representing another route to World Cup qualification, Madugu will be hoping his players can put the setback behind them and produce a stronger performance when the stakes are at their highest.
