Nollywood Mourns as Award-Winning Filmmaker Dimbo Atiya Dies

The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of acclaimed filmmaker, producer and director, Dimbo Atiya, whose remarkable contributions to Nollywood helped shape some of the country’s most successful television dramas and feature films.

The news of his passing was confirmed on Thursday by actor Mofe Duncan, who announced the tragic development in an emotional post on Instagram. The cause of Atiya’s death had not been disclosed as of the time of filing this report.

Expressing his grief, Duncan described the late filmmaker as one of the entertainment industry’s greatest creative minds.

“God no, not Dimbo. No!!! No!!! No!!! I am devastated. One of the greatest minds of the entertainment industry,” he wrote.

Following the announcement, tributes flooded social media as actors, filmmakers and other entertainment personalities celebrated Atiya’s life, talent and generosity.

Actress Sophia Alakija described his death as “one hell of a shock,” remembering him as a genuine and supportive figure who believed in her career long before many others.

According to her, Atiya had remained one of her strongest supporters since 2017, adding that he never stopped encouraging her professional growth.

Film director Taiwo Shittu also paid tribute, recalling one of their final conversations about an important project.

He revealed that the late filmmaker had assured him of his unwavering support, saying, “I’m here if you need me for anything,” words he described as a lasting reflection of Atiya’s generous spirit.

Widely respected for telling authentic African stories, particularly those showcasing Northern Nigerian culture, Dimbo Atiya built an impressive career spanning television and cinema.

Over the years, he produced more than 500 television episodes and five feature films, earning widespread acclaim for projects including Sons of the Caliphate, Halita, Still Falling, The Plan, Drawing Strength, Strong, and War: Wrath and Revenge.

His excellence in television production was recognised in 2022 when he won the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards award for Best Africa Magic Original Drama Series for producing Halita, a milestone that cemented his reputation as one of Nollywood’s finest storytellers.

Dimbo Atiya’s passing marks another significant loss for the Nigerian entertainment industry, where he was admired not only for his creativity but also for mentoring young talents and elevating African storytelling through compelling productions.

As tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, friends and admirers, many have described him as a visionary filmmaker whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of actors, producers and directors across the continent.
