Lagos Gets One More University as FG Approves 33 New Institutions Nationwide
Lagos State is set to expand its higher education landscape following the Federal Government’s approval of a new private university as part of the licensing of 33 new universities across the country.
The newly approved institution for Lagos is Regnum Medical University, one of 20 private universities granted approval, bringing fresh opportunities for medical education and healthcare training in the state.
The latest approvals increase the total number of universities in Nigeria to 309, comprising federal, state and private institutions.
The Federal Government approved seven new federal universities, six state-owned universities, and 20 private universities.
Among the new federal institutions are the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Tai (Rivers State); Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia (Kaduna State); Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Ijagun (Ogun State); Federal University of Agriculture and Developmental Studies, Iragbiji (Osun State); Federal University of Technology and Environmental Studies, Iyin-Ekiti (Ekiti State); Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho (Oyo State); and the Federal University of Health Science and Technology, Tsafe (Zamfara State).
The newly approved state universities include Abdulsalam Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action in Mokwa, Niger State; Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science and Technology, Oferekpe; University of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering, Ezza, Ebonyi State; Benue State University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh; Cross River University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa; and the University of Innovation, Science and Technology, Omuma, Imo State.
Other private universities approved alongside Regnum Medical University are located in Delta, Anambra, Ogun, Ondo, the Federal Capital Territory, Osun, Kwara and Akwa Ibom states.The approval is expected to deepen access to tertiary education, strengthen specialised professional training and expand private sector participation in Nigeria’s university system.
